Tuesday, July 23, 2024 ––Government has come out to respond to claims that Jomo Kenyatta International Airport JKIA was on sale.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi today Tuesday July 23 told the Senate that nothing was further from the truth and that JKIA is not on sale as it was being propagated out there.
“Let me discount immediately that JKIA is not on sale. This is a public asset strategic and if it was going to be sold, you can only do it after a full public process that Parliament must endorse,” stated Mudavadi amid Gen Zs protests that were to take place at the facility today Tuesday July 23.
Mudavadi, therefore, warned that anybody giving such an impression that the JKIA was being sold out, was wrong.
“Anyone giving such an impression is not factual and not true. What we are doing is to think about modernising our airports.
“So, JKIA must look at its investment programme so that everything works smooth during the expansion exercise. Everything must be done above board,” added the Prime CS.
During yesterday’s Citizen TV show interview, Senator Onyonka raised speculations after claiming that he had documents to prove that the JKIA was being leased out to a foreigner.
He sought answers as to why this can be done before all Kenyans are given an opportunity to share out what they feel about their facility.
“Why are they going to the airport? Imagine signing off our airport to a foreigner to run it for 30 years. And after the contract expires, the facility will remain in the hands of the investor on equity basis at the rate of 18 percent, internally?” he c,aimed further.
The politician confessed being the whistleblower in the multimillion scandal after a young man working in France came across the sale documents on his desk before passing the confidential information to him.
Onyonka, who is the current Senator Kisii County, would then share the details with the Senate and the media.
