Monday, June 5, 2023 – A form three student by the name Manaazil Adow Ahmed was shot dead by police in Wajir.
The death occurred on Sunday June 4 when she had joined other locals in protesting frequent power blackouts in their area
A source from the ground told Homenews.co.ke that the protesters had accessed the KPLC offices, vandalized property when the anti-riot police arrived with same force.
And it was during the melee that the high school student was shot and killed with police claiming that that the protests became violent and rowdy prompting them to pull a trigger.
Wajir West Member of Parliament MP Yusuf Farah Muliro and his Wajir South counterpart Mohamed Adow demanded justice for the slain student.
“The people were protesting against persistent power blackouts and instead of them getting help, they were shot at by police. This is wrong. We have to get a power supply because we all pay taxes. No excuse,” Wajir West MP Farah stated.
He further called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority IPOA to investigate the shooting and take necessary action against the police.
The leaders said locals have a right to go on the streets to air their grievances when they feel services are not being delivered well.
“The people of Wajir have every right to peacefully protest the power blackout. I am with the people on this. We’ve been told lies for far too long,” Adow said.
The body of the shot form three student was taken to Wajir morgue awaiting postmortem.
