Saturday, March 25, 2023 – The Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI has succumbed to public pressure over their Friday March 24 misleading images on Raila’s protests.
After feeling the weight of public outrage on old and some foreign images they had posted purporting that they were new captures from Monday March 20 mass action, the DCI has come out to apologize for what they have referred to as ‘mix-up’.
“DCI wishes to unreservedly apologize to the public for the mix-up of images in yesterday’s communication, which was meant to appeal for information regarding the whereabouts of criminal suspects involved in Monday’s illegal demonstrations.
“The mix-up was partly occasioned by the overwhelming information that we had received via the #FichuakwaDCI online platform regarding the reported incidents of violence,” the DCI apologised.
It, however, continued calling for the arrest of another group of new individuals who it feels participated in Nairobi’s Azimio’s mass action.
“While we work towards rectifying the same and maintaining public confidence in our operations, the Directorate continues to appeal to the public for information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects whose images appear below,” it added.
Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua on Saturday, March 26, had joined other Kenyans in demanding an apology from both the National Police Service NPS and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI after the latter was exposed for misleading the public
In her tough statement, she noted that the various fact-checks indicated that the photos of violence – which the DCI claimed were from Azimio’s protest – were taken from past events and other countries.
“DCI can no longer be trusted to police or investigate fairly after the deliberately misleading photos debacle exposed by the media.
“This confirms that the illegitimate regime used sections of the police & thugs to brutalize protesters last Monday and to cause destruction and are planning to do a repeat on Monday 27,” read the statement in part.
Furthermore, lawyers led by Donald Kipkorir also took issue with the DCI for being careless at work when everybody else including foreign countries rely on every intel from the office.
