Sunday, June 27, 2021 -Gladys Wanga, Woman Representative Homabay County, has emerged the best fighter for poor Kenyans in Parliament.
News reaching Homenews.co.ke on Sunday June 27 proved that Ms Wanga has been consistent in shielding the less fortunate against punitive measures from the State. She has time and again stood her ground anytime she feels the government was introducing unnecessary taxes meant to burden the poor citizens.
Latest is when the heroine confidently amended the Finance Bill that wanted Kenyans to be overtaxed through an amended Finance Bill. This was recognized by her colleagues in Parliament.
Sources from Parliament walls reported that Wanga – Chairperson Finance Committee- stood firm and rejected the new taxing brackets as was fronted by the Treasury. She provided that Kenyans were already burdened and subjecting them to more pain would be imprudent.
“As much as we want to raise funds to finance our budget, we should be livid about the fact that Kenyans are already struggling,” Wanga argued.
It is outlined that Wanga managed to make a total of seven key changes that finally rescued Kenyans from the harsh tax plans from the State. Among the actions she took was to block anymore motorcycle taxing arguing that bodaboda had become a main livelihood for most struggling youths.
The ODM Party Woman Representative also pushed MPs to pressure the State to abandon the plan to tax sugar confectioneries like sweets and chocolates so that to boost local manufacturing which will eventually reduce market cost. She argued that many unemployed Kenyans and mothers depend on hawking sweets; and therefore overtaxing the products may be a big blow to may families.
She also forced to stop taxing on transportation of sugar from factories and exempting local goods from export duties.
Moreover, Wanga reviewed to 100 percent deduction for investments outside the big cities – Nairobi and Mombasa – so that to distribute development.
And last year, the politician also was on record fighting for improved health care in every county by proposing construction of well equipped facilities in every devolved unit.
While talking to the media to respond to allegations about her connection with Raila Odinga family, Wanga argued that she did not get into politics because of Odinga.
“But I must tell you that, before I joined politics in 2013 I was not known to Raila Odinga, actually it is Mama Ida Odinga (Raila’s wife) who took interest and saw the potential in me,” Wanga narrated.
At the moment, she is reportedly planning to succeed incumbent Homabay Governor Cyprian Owiti in 2022 who is now serving his last term.
