Wednesday, September 21, 2022 –President William Ruto has urged the world to support Africa in becoming a food independent continent.
Addressing from New York City in USA on Wednesday September 21 during his debut at the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) meeting, President Ruto said Africa now needs to be self-reliant due to its good investment opportunities that could be utilized by both foreign and internal investors to produce its own enough food and supplies.
In his long speech, the president observed that, though, Africa is worst hit by climatic crisis, it still contributes very little to atmospheric emissions that brings about global warming.
“Africa is impacted more than other regions by climate change; despite our contribution of less than 4 per cent of total emissions. This report further places Africa’s adaptation annual needs at sh 10.4 trillion (US Dollars 86.5 billion) by 2030.
“Conversely, African countries are contributing more than their fair share for adaptation efforts, currently estimated at 10% of GDP annually. \It is my hope that we will, at CoP27, call for enhanced adaptation efforts, fulfilment and implementation of pledges,” President Ruto explained.
He added that in Africa, all countries accepted to halt any attempts to practice dangerous fossil fuel extraction so as to save not only the environment but also millions of lives.
The newly-elected president of Kenya then used the opportunity to ask the developed nations to support Africa to transit into a fully-fledged technology and economic hub.
Ruto and his team traveled to the New York City in the USA on Tuesday September 20 after attending the official burial ceremony of the Great Britain United Kingdom Monarch Queen Elizabeth II.
Among others, former Chief Administration Secretary CAS Ababu Namwamba and their head of communication Hussein Muhamed accompanied him.
