Friday, April 23, 2021 -Joint Committee on Legal and Justice Affairs has downplayed circulation of wrong BBI which was reportedly forwarded to County Assemblies.
Reacting to the claims that County Assemblies debated on a wrong document, the Committee has now clarified that the errors noticed in the Report are so insignificant and cannot create tension.
Both joint chairmen Muturi Kigano of Kangema and Okong’o Omugeni from Nyamira Constituency told the media that the report is ready and will be forwarded to the two speakers for debate. They added that any discrepancies in the report had already been captured in their notes.
“We have taken note and that affects 32 County Assemblies and that is captured in our report,” Omogeni said adding: “There were no two copies of the Bill. There could be small errors here and there but that is correctable”.
In his updates, all the members of the joint committee appended their signatures on their finding and recomenadtions accept Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata who abstained.
On its part, the Wafula Chebukati led IEBC distanced itself from the confusion surrounding different versions of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2020.
Mr. Chebukati defended that the commission forwarded to counties what it had been given. He termed the development as ‘political’ which they cannot be part of.
