Thursday, February 4, 2021 -Deputy President William Ruto played a key role in trying hard to make sure Raila odinga’s 2007 presidential race becomes a reality. He too helped President Uhuru Kenyatta to win elections twice.
Ruto at the moment is arguably the most popular politician who can win a presidential race against some of his obvious rivals. This is because since their election into power, Dr. Ruto never allowed himself to sit down like the rest of the Vice Presidents did. He always claimed to be the bonafide principal assistant to the president and therefore had to work all round the clock.
And by traversing the country almost every day, the DP therefore gained massive support across the country because of his nature of tours which he always termed development oriented. He would try hard to reach every corner of the country launching and commissioning projects some private some public. He was all over. For example, today the second of command, he would be in Nyeri, Moyale, Marsabit, Turkana and later in the evening you would read that he is presiding over a meeting in Nakuru. Wake up tomorrow and the news would be the same – Ruto is headed to Western for a series of fundraisers for youth groups, SACCOS and in churches.
Granted, Ruto appeared strategic enough by making sure he is visible almost every day to everybody and in every function what then brings us to the difficult question that why would Uhuru then be unhappy with such a hard working assistant? Why would anyone question Ruto’s tours if they were genuinely meant to develop the country? The answer is simple, some sections got unsettled and suspected his type of hard work. Anytime something is overdone talk of overdosing, it turns poisonous. Ruto overworked and this turned not only poisonous but also suspect.
That said, Ruto’s main mistake was therefore over-shadowing his own boss. It is never done so especially in politics because the moment that happens, the boss starts reading malice into the whole thing.
To prove that this behaviour never went down well with the head of State, today (Thursday Feb 4) while addressing at Mois’ Kabarak home in Nakuru, President Uhuru Kenyatta repeated usual rant against those who are obsessed with 2022. He called this ‘arrogance’.
“The arrogance we see in today’s leadership raises many questions on the future of this country. Moi had strength which he drew from his humility,” Uhuru said.
To this end, Ruto may not be having any extra alternative left ahead but to soldier on with his style of doing things and see what this will eventually bring him. If it helps well but if it fails to yield, life also goes on.
