Wednesday, June 12, 2024 –Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has told Majority Leader in the National Assembly, Kimani Ichung’wah, that he is proud of coming from the village.
Addressing the concern from Mombasa today Wednesday June 12 where he flew to yesterday via the Kenya Airways flight, the DP, for the first time, addressed the village issue saying everybody has his or her roots.
He explained that people only meet in town for jobs but, after everything else, they return home in the village where they were born and that is what he is proud of.
Concerns about the Village
Gachagua, who was speaking during the opening of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya International Scientific Conference, also wondered why someone could be concerned about his village in Mathira Constituency.
“I don’t want to speak a lot but if you allow me a bit, let me move back to Nairobi then back to the village.
“You know, every person has somewhere they came from and everyone has a home,” he stated adding that in cities like Nairobi and Mombasa, people only come to earn a livelihood. “I don’t know why anybody should have a problem with where we come from and everybody should be proud of their origin and identity,” he said.
He also added that when he is in the village, he maintains speaking Kikuyu dialect because that is what the locals speak throughout.
The second in command argued further that he only speaks English when he is attending city meetings outside his home; and bragging about English all the time is not part of his culture.
On June 6, MP Ichung’wah remarked that it was impossible to build a kingdom with someone who still craves attention from his village.
But in a rejoinder a week ago, the deputy president remarked that he would not be cowed into speaking Swahili or English when he visits his village in Nyeri County adding that using vernacular was a way of appreciating his people.
Ruling Party officials Sharply Differ
This is happening as a number of cabinet secretaries as well as MPs in the ruling party continued throwing barbs at the DP whom they have accused of sabotaging the president’s plans in government.
They have claimed that the DP is using both intimidation and blackmail tactics to force his say and way in this government.
Among the ruling Party politicians who have publicly opened fire at Gachagua include, Ndindi Nyoro from Kiharu, Kimani Ichung’wah from Kikuyu and Didmus Barasa of Kimilili.
Baras, days ago, told the DP in the face that he was beaten by Prof Kithure Kindiki in the running mate contest but Kindiki and Ruto chose to give the position to Gachagua, instead.
