Thursday, April 18, 2024 –Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed any police officer to arrest motorists flouting highway and road safety guidelines.
Making the directive today Thursday April 18, CS Murkomen noted that the amount of road accidents in the country were being mostly caused by carelessness from the side of motorists who either over-speed, overload or drive while drunk.
“Good morning, Kenya. Following the directives issued by his Excellency the President, ALL Police officers are under instructions to enforce the LAW without considering their police departments. Such errand drivers, riders and passangers will be in alot of trouble. The numbers must fall,” he announced.
He averred that road accidents shatter families and devastate communities. The toll on human suffering and economic loss had become immense.
“The cost of road carnage to Kenya’s economy is estimated at sh 450 billion a year. The bulk of the burden is disproportionately carried by trauma victims and their families, but our hospitals and emergency services also feel the effect,” added the CS.
Yesterday Wednesday April 17, Murkomen was glad to have joined H.E. the President William Ruto in launching the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028 that will help make roads safer for all users.
The Plan includes initiatives to improve road infrastructure, enhance enforcement measures, raise public awareness, and promote safe driving.
More than five fatal accidents have since happened in the past three weeks with Kenyans raising alarm over the same. Many Kenyans have been accusing the Ministry of Transport of being reluctant in enforcing law and order on roads.
