Surrendered Lawyer Paul Gicheru sought permission from Statehouse before he moved to the Hague to present himself.
Responding to claims over his unexpected gesture, Gicheru noted that he first wrote to Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua before he left the country.
His lawyer John Khaminwa said he was in contact with his client Gicheru on Thursday and spoke about his traveling mission in which he involved his wife. They processed traveling visas at the Netherlands Embassy.
“I was not arrested in London or anywhere. I voluntarily purchased a ticket for myself and my wife to travel to Amsterdam. I got permission from the Head of Civil Service to travel out of the country and sort out a personal issue,” Khaminwa quoted their conversation with Mr. Gicheru who also serves as Chairman of the Export Processing zones EPZ Authority.
The embattled lawyer is expected to appear before the pretrial chamber today(Friday) at 4 PM a move the prosecution led by Fatou Bensouda have welcomed.
“I call on the Kenyan authorities to fulfill their obligations under the Rome Statute to ensure the surrender of the remaining two suspects to the custody of the Court, so that their guilt or innocence on the charges against them may be determined in a court of law,” Bensouida stated.
She wants two other co-accused Philip Kipkoech Bett and Walter Osapiri Barasa to be brought before the court for prosecution.
Bensouda had accused the three of blackmailing witnesses lined up against Deputy President William Ruto with an aim of collapsing his case.
But even as this is happening, there is a new twist to the case with a video clip doing rounds on social media also linking the death of Lawyer Mutula Kilonzo to the whole ICC saga.
It is claimed that Lawyer Mutula had gathered a lot of evidence on what had transpired at Eldoret Kiambaa Church killing hundreds of members of Kikuyu community who had sought refuge at the holy temple.
