Wednesday, March 1, 2023 –Bola Tinubu, was declared president-elect of Africa’s most populous nation in the early hours of Wednesday March 1.
This happened even after a weekend-long election that the main opposition parties pulled out citing rampant fraud from the ruling side.
Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, will take over leadership of a country grappling with Islamist insurgencies in the Northeast, armed attacks, killings and kidnappings.
Moreover, currently, Nigeria is facing conflict between livestock herders and farmers, cash, fuel and power shortages, and perennial corruption that opponents say Buhari’s party terribly failed to stamp out.
Tinubu was declared by Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission Yakubu Mahmood, the Nigeria’s President-elect after garnering 8.8M votes against Atiku Abubakar who got 6.9M votes as Peter Obi comes third with 6.1M votes.
After the exercise, European Union observers contradicted former Kenyan head of State Uhuru Kenyatta’s AU report on the election, saying there was a lack of transparency.
