Monday, April 29, 2024 –Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has toured the Maai Mahiu area to assess the damage caused by the catastrophic Sunday night flash floods.
Speaking from the scene today Monday, CS Kipchumba urged the country not to make jokes with the ongoing rescue exercise saying this is about lives of innocent people.
“Kenyans this are not the jokes we make on the internet. These are people’s lives. When we ask you to move to higher grounds or stop using certain roads and rivers, please just listen,” he announced.
He also assured that the National government was doing all that it could to help control the escalating situation on the ground.
“Earlier today, when I arrived at Maai Mahiu to commiserate with the victims of the landslide tragedy and assess the infrastructure damage. The Government will do everything to ease the pain of the affected families and restore the damaged roads,” added Murkomen.
Area Governor Susan Kihika outlined what her county government was doing to mitigate the situation and urged other well-wishers to help in any way.
“We can support each other and help identify the true cause of the menace. In hospitals, we are working hard this day to make sure we save as many lives as possible,” Kihika assured in her statement.
She noted that, her administration had reached out to private facility owners to help join forces with nurses in Nakuru to save lives.
“We have talked with private facilities and we are sorting out how they can get involved fully; and we welcome any help from anybody.
“It’s a sad morning and sad start as we get out there on the ground and see what more we can do to sail through the situation. We need this help from the national government,” said Kihika.
Present in the emergency tour was also Kiambu Governor Kimani Wa Matangi among several other leaders from the region.
They arrived at Kamuchiri Village in Mai Mahiu, Naivasha Constituency in the afternoon to assess the situation after the Kijabe Dam burst open killing 45 people on the spot.
The Nairobi-Nakuru Highway remained closed for the better part of the day.
