Saturday, April 13, 2024 –Martha Karua is not an automatic successor to Raila Odinga in Azimio. New details have now emerged.
An insider has shared the worrying Deed of Agreement between Raila Odinga and Martha Karua saying nowhere in the agreement shows who will replace Odinga in case he leaves the coalition or retires.
Professor Makau Mutua, who has been a long time opposition insider, revealed intrigues behind the agreement that was signed between coalition members heading to the 2022 contest.
He says, though Odinga had picked Martha Karua as preferred running mate, in the Deed, he never indicated who should take over Azimio.
“The Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Deed of Agreement provides for a deputy party leader, but one was never chosen, or designated. The position is vacant.
“Nor is there any provision that Azimio’s running mate in the 2022 elections would be deputy party leader,” he stated.
Mutua, who is a distinguished law professor, was reacting to Karua’s media claims that she is the most fit to take over Azimio as Odinga walks to the African Union Commission job in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Mutua who served as the official spokesperson and head of the Secretariat’s think tank in the 2022 polls, added that the succession of Mr. Odinga hangs in balance and that anyone can fight for it or Odinga can bless it with anyone of his choice.
What he clarified is that, nobody can claim to be the best man or woman from Azimio to take over the position including Narc-Kenya Party boss Martha Karua.
Prof Mutua made the remarks in response to Karua’s interview with the Daily Nation on Thursday, April 11.
Ms Karua told her hosts that she is taking over from Raila who is now aiming to be the next AUC chairman.
