Thursday, June 13, 2024 –Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has lauded the public for waking up against bad governance ahead of the Finance Bill 2024 debate.
In a statement he shared with this desk on Thursday June 13, MP Sifuna noted that the youths, mostly, who are not in elective positions have come out boldly to warn the State against the Finance Bill 2024 which is widely viewed as punitive.
In the statement, Senator Sifuna argued that the civic awakening currently with the masses will help keep in check the current government which is keen on imposing too much taxes on the already suffering citizens.
“The civic awakening in Kenya is something to behold. I like that citizen are taking up public spaces to express themselves on key matters. Content creators, comedians, everyone is taking up space hitherto hogged by politicos like me and doing a great job at it! You are calling your MPs finally! Im happy wakenya wenzangu. And before you ask, the standing instruction to ODM Party MPs is to say NO,” he stated.
He was speaking this following a successful morning show on Citizen Tv where comedian Erick Omondi and his counterpart Njugush were appearing to discuss matters the economy of the country.
“Its not going to be business as usual if the Finance bill passes . I was in Parliament and MPs called me a mere comedian. They will not have peace. Another day when they pass this Bill and we are going to go the streets.
“Raila we salute him and respect him for fighting his time; but when they Finance Bill 2024 goes through, the government will be stopped by us. I have a daughter she will not walk in this current atmosphere.
Erick further told host Jeff Koinange that it was bad for President William Ruto to keep globetrotting when, at home, the economy is not doing well.
He opined that, with the current state of affairs, President William Ruto should maintain not more than five international trips a year.
“I have fear and I have done research with my lawyers. President Ruto has managed 68 trips in just two years in office; Samia, Kagame, Museveni have not even gone half of that. Ruto should travel five times a year until the economy of Kenya stabilizes,” argued Omondi on Citizen Tv panelist show.
Njugush and colleagues on the show warned Members of Parliament against supporting the Bill. The panel also warned that it was still wrong for MPs to act as if nothing is not wrong with the Finance Bill 2024. That even keeping quiet or failing to de-campaign it is wrong in itself and that citizens who elected them are watching.
