Friday, April 7, 2023 –Most Members of Parliament MPs have not received their March 2013 salaries.
Making this rant today Friday April 7, Minority Leader in the National Assembly Opiyo Wandayi, from Azimio wing, has claimed that he is yet to receive his March 2023 pay.
Wandayi, through a detailed hard-hitting statement delivered today, took issue with President William Ruto for being behind the crisis.
“For the first time in our history, even MPs have not been paid as we head towards mid-month.
“Only members of the security services – police and military – have been paid as we speak and the reason must be obvious to all,” MP Wandayi claimed.
The ODM Member of Parliament went ahead to claim that William Ruto’s administration always gets its priorities wrong and that is the reason it has been caught in a mixup.
He wondered where the sh 9.49 billion Ruto claimed to be saving from scrapped away subsidy programmes which his predecessor had launched, is going.
“For the first time since independence in 1963, the Government of Kenya is unable to pay salaries to civil servants and members of parliament. Nearly all civil servants don’t know when or if they will ever be paid.
“The situation has been (deteriorating) progressively since December 2022. This month, things got worse.
He went ahead to argue that the economy of the country was headed to a crisis and this could soon move to worse situation if something is not quickly done.
“We fear that this country is collapsing while we sit pretty hoping for miracles,” Wandayi claimed.
His sentiments were coming just hours after youthful Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya, also claimed that he had not been paid.
“Even is we have not received our pay. Let us survive on music,” he stated.
Salasya was saying this in a Facebook video recording of Thursday April 6 in which he was also dancing to one of his favourite songs.
These claims were, however, refuted by Kakamega County Senator Boni Khalwale – elected on the ruling UDA Party ticket – who described the two as cheap propagandists.
“Cheap propaganda. We’ve been paid,” Khalwale hit back.
As usual MPs have been getting their sh 800,000 pay by 28th of every month just like the rest of the civil servants.
