Friday, December 16, 2022 –Government has asked Kenyans travelling along busy highways in the country to start calling out drunk and careless drivers.
Transport Cabinet Secretary CS Kipchumba Murkomen, who has been moved by the new wave of road accidents, has called on all Kenyans traveling this Christmas to help fight the road menace.
Addressing this matter on Thursday December 16 afternoon at Naivasha Inland Deport, the new Transport CS accused passengers boarding PSV vehicles of contributing to their own transport problems on major roads in the country.
“Why are passengers allowing a driver that is misbehaving on the road to an extent of cheering them on?
“Kenyans should not keep quiet when a driver is committing traffic offenses,” CS Murkomen added.
He called on Kenyans who care about life to call out reckless drivers who over-speed or appear drunk on the road.
This, he argued, will play a major role in reducing the number of accidents that are claiming so many innocent lives in the country.
“Should the driver fail to comply with the demands, passengers should promptly report him to the police and subsequently alight from the vehicle,” Murkomen advised.
He underscored the relevance of coordination between stakeholders – general public and the police, in keeping all roads safe.
These orders are coinciding with the ongoing nationwide crackdown by the National Transport and Safety Authority NTSA and traffic police officers against rogue drivers on all Kenyan roads.
Mr. Murkomen had earlier instructed Kenya Railways to increase the number of trains from Nairobi Terminus to Kisumu from 21st December 2022 to 3rd January 2023.
He reasoned that this will help meet the increasing demand for transportation occasioned by the festive season and ease pressure on our road.
