Friday, May 17, 2024 – Molo MP Kimani Kuria had a difficult time on Citizen Tv to explain the taxing mechanism of their Kenya Kwanza administration.
Addressing the concern on live media interview today Friday May 17 morning on Days Break show hosted by Sam Gituku, MP Kuria argued that VAT increment on bread was triggered by the fact that it has been causing Diabetes to many people in the country.
He noted that this was discovered and revealed in a meeting MPs had with a team from the Treasury which delivered the news.
“What is the justification of raising VAT of bread from zero to 16 percent?” Sam Gituku sought an answer from the lawmaker.
Kuria would claim that after a recent long discussion with the Treasury, the findings came to play that bread consumption causes Diabetes and that is where the tax idea came from.
“We had a very long discussion with a team from the Treasury on VAT on fuel and it emerged that bread is one of the main sources of Diabetes. But the argument we are getting from the members of the public is that bread is no longer a luxury and is used every breakfast and consumed by almost every family around the country,” Kuria told Sam Gituku.
Immediately, host Gituku sought to know the specific study that had shown the diabetes claims from the bread consumption in the country.
“So, there is a study that Diabetes comes from bread” he posed as the MP fumbled to respond to the query.
“I am not from the National Treasury Sam,” Kuria told Gituku in back and forth argument.
Aldas MP Adan Keinan was also tasked by Gituku to explain what has been the benefit of the Finance Act 2023 because it has since been passed and in action.
In response, MP Keinan then told him that the price of Unga and overall food had reduced because of prudent Finance clauses in the Act; but couldn’t specify which clause in particular.
