Monday, July 17, 2023 –Government has send a counter reaction to the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights OHCHR at the United Nations in protest of the Azimio la Umoja’s ongoing ‘economic sabotage’.
Government of William Ruto lodged a formal complaint on why the OHCHR was siding with Azimio’s ongoing unrest before doing enough research from both sides.
This is after the Commission released a statement asking the government to safeguard lives of protesters and to stop using force through police officers.
The commission raised concerns on how the government was dealing with protests in the country even as the Constitution gives greenlight to peaceful picketing.
In their Friday July 14 statement, the UN heaped blame on the William Ruto’s government for trying to use illegal ways to countering Azimio.
The letter which was in two pages and signed by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kenya to the UN, OHCHR, has now fetched immense criticism from government top officials who accuses it of relying on one side of the story.
Government has warned that such direction would continue making life difficult amid intensified calls for more protests from Raila and his group.
“The use of such information without due diligence raises concerns about the quality and reliability of the data in question.” Government responded
The William Ruto’s administration has, therefore, asked the UN Spokesman Jeremy Laurence to first verify why police were being accused by the opposition before going public.
This UN support to Azimio, according to government, will be taken advantage of by the opposition to go on with demonstrations; what is not good for the country’s stability.
This is happening as the opposition and government plan to take-on each other this week from Wednesday to Friday.
Raila announced that demonstrations will take place three-straight days every week as President William Ruto and his deputy ERigathi Gachagua maintained that no body will be allowed on the streets this week or later.
