Tuesday, July 11, 2023 –Transport and Roads Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed a temporary halt on mandatory retesting of Public Service Vehicle PSV drivers
Making the changes, the CS for Roads today Tuesday July 11, said the exercise could commence from September 1 this year after stakeholders’ recommendations are submitted to his desk.
Mr. Murkomen noted through his Tuesday July 11 statement that Transport stakeholders had agreed forming of a multi-agency committee to help look into the sector.
Among the issues they want addressed include those submitted by both drivers and conductors around the country.
He confirmed that the players had served his office with a memo today Tuesday July 2023 at exactly 3PM.
“We have agreed as well that they shall submit the names of the officials representing all the industry players by 1st August 2023. The exercise will take 14 days and the report with recommendations submitted for further decision-making,” read the statement in part.
For that reason. The CS announced a halt in the whole exercise until September 1 this year when all parties will have agreed on the way forward.
“Taking note of the above, I hereby halt the retesting of drivers until 1st September 2023 to give the multi-agency committee time to address the rising concerns,” Murkomen added.
The Transport CS noted that his Ministry adopted the retesting of drivers so that to reduce the rising number of road traffic fatalities in the country.
He raised alarm that the cases of road crash, or late, have been rising in numbers every day; what his office had decided to control through other easily available measures.
