Sunday, July 9, 2023 –Police have released over 35 activists who they had arrested during the July 7 Saba Saba demonstrations held in Nairobi.

The dozens of rights individuals were arrested in the CBD by the police during their involvement in the anti-government protests that started on July 7.

Making the confirmation today Sunday July 9, Civil Activist Boniface Mwangi confirmed that his team had been held for many hours without any charges being preferred to them; but indicated that finally they had secured their freedom.

“All the young activists arrested on Friday in Nairobi at the Saba Saba March for Our Lives protests have been released. They hadn’t committed a crime.

“They were simply carrying placards. The police have given them free bond. Thank you to everyone who demanded their release,” Mr. Mwangi stated.

Their dramatic arrest saw former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, on Saturday, July 8, move to save them but, in that process, was teargassed at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.

At that time, he was in the company of Lawyer John Khaminwa as well as hundreds of rights activists from different lobby groups who have since joined the opposition’s demonstrations.

In the photos and videos which reached this desk, Mutunga and colleagues were seen scampering for their safety as police continued lobbing teargas towards their cars.

The actions by the police would then fetch sharp criticism from both likely and unlikely quarters among them several Kenyans on social media.

However, David Ndii, the chairman of the Presidential Economic Council, argued that a few minutes above the legal 24-hour timeline was not breaking the law.

“Minutes short of 24 hours, they can hold them without charge. Police have done exactly what they intended, abuse power within the law.

“We need police accountability, not executive goodwill. But these politically wounded activists think I’m the enemy – lashing out without thinking,” Mr. David Ndii stated.

Angered by these sentiments, Boniface Mwangi would quickly take-on the economist whom he told off for defending a government that was openly breaking the law and misusing power.
