Tuesday, February 20, 2024 –Embakasi East Member of Parliament MP Babu Owino chose to attend private matters than voting against the controversial Housing Bill.

Kenyawide.com has realised that quite a number of opposition-allied lawmakers failed appearing in the House to shoot down the Bill.

Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi

These several Azimio MPs who were not in attendance were Babu Owino (Embakasi East), Peter Salasya (Mumias East) and Naisula Lesuuda (Samburu West).

Timothy Wanyonyi (Westlands) and Beatrice Elachi (Dagoretti North) were also not present during the voting exercise.

Shortly, through his official social media platform, MP Babu Owino would share photos of him tutoring a Mathematics class in Kisumu County.

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris, who belongs to the Orange Democratic Movement ODM Party, also missed in action.

We later learnt that the Woman Rep was busy attending a Gender Mainstreaming Workshop for Women Parliamentarians.

The Affordable Housing Bill 2023 on Tuesday, February 20, sailed through to its third reading after 141 legislators voted in favour of the Bill at the Second reading stage.

Ruto, therefore, on Tuesday, scored the first win in his quest to sustain funding for his affordable housing programme after the new bill passed the reading as he had wished.

After the split voting, 141 MPs cast their ballot in favour of the bill against 58 who opposed it.

“I now wish to announce the voting to the House. In a division on the second reading of the Affordable Housing Bill, 2023, the results are as follows; the ayes 141, the nays 58; total votes 199, abstentions nil, so the ayes have it,” Speaker Moses Wetang’ula said.

During the today’s proceedings, lawmakers allied to the United Democratic Alliance UDA Party heeded to President William Ruto’s rallying call and turned up in large numbers to throw their weight behind the piece of legislation.

As the vote went on, Kenyans were quick, however, to observe that several Azimio lawmakers were absent to help pull down the Bill they have been opposed to.
