Monday, May 13, 2024 –Narc Kenya Party boss Martha Karua has challenged the Kenya Kwanza administration to move all flood victims to affordable housing.
In her latest statement over the plight of the affected families, Ms Karua said, the government bears full responsibility of settling the affected families and providing for their basic needs.
“Life is hard because of cost of living, there are women who have nothing to give their children others have suffered as a result of floods…. Their children have died and they have been left without shelter. Our taxes should cater for their needs. It is enough to take care of their education, medical and housing needs. To give them temporary homes and move them to affordable houses that have been built using our taxes,” Karua argued.
And talking about the proposed Finance Bill 2024, the Azimio la Umoja principal equally castigated the Kenya Kwanza saying that, though, it is constitutional to tax Kenyans, this must be done in a considerate manner not to put pressure on the less fortunate in the country.
“Taxes must be paid, but you cannot tax (Kenyans) until you deny the poor food. You cannot tax until a child of a poor person sleeps hungry and fails to go to school,” she added.
The Azimio la Umoja coalition has rebuked Kenya Kwanza for the new tax proposals, threatening a return of nationwide protests if the proposals are adopted.
“We cannot allow these punitive taxations that are choking Kenyans,” said Kalonzo Musyoka on Sunday during their press briefing.
On his part, Eugene Wamalwa accused the government of disregarding Kenyans who are unable to afford a meal due to the high cost of living.
