Tuesday, September 19, 2023 –Kenya Defence Forces KDF has been given full mandat to start renovations of key National Stadia in the country.
In a statement from the Ministry of Sports led by Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, the State has handed over at least four main stadia to the KDF department for reconstruction.
The reason being to allow the facilities to be developed to international standards so that to plan on how to start hosting high profile games from around the world.
This, according to the CS for Sports, will also boost the economy of the country through sports tourism like is happens in other developed nations.
Four stadia for set for revamping
CS Namwamba revealed that the four stadia are Talanta Sports City, Nyayo National Stadium, Kasarani Stadium and Kipchoge Keino Stadium.
He disclosed further that the decision is part of the government’s plan to complete the facilities before the Confederation of African Football CAF’s announcement on where to host the 2027 African Cup of Nations slated for September 27, 2023.
It is clear that Kenya made a joint bid with neighboring nations – Uganda and Tanzania – to host the 2027 AFCON matches.
Other Africa countries which tendered their bid are Egypt, Algeria, and Ivory Coast.
Militarization of the State
With KDF taking over these constructions and renovations, it leaves more questions unanswered as Kenya Kwanza wing used to accuse the former President, Uhuru Kenyatta, of militarization of the State.
Apart from Nairobi Metropolitan Services which had been handed to Kenya Airforce’s Major General Mohamed Badi, other 10 State institutions including the Kenya Meat Commission KMC had also been handed over to the military.
Furthermore, Uhuru directed the KDF to take charge of renovations on the Thika-Nayuki Meter Gauge Railway, the Port of Kisumu and the Nairobi-Kisumu Railway Lines.
During Kenyatta’s tenure, the KDF department constructed to its completion, a 10,000-seater Ulinzi Sports Complex at Lang’ata Barracks.
