Wednesday, June 21, 2023 –One follower of cult-church leader Paul Mackenzie is reported to have died in hospital on Wednesday June 21 morning.
This is after the said follower fasted to his death in what was described as a deliberate hunger strike as per the teachings of their leader, Pastor Mackenzie.
He had been rushed to hospital in Malindi Town so that to get an urgent help but succumbed on arrival. Sources told media outlets.
On a similar note, two more followers could also succumb to hunger and they are currently in hospital where they have refused to eat.
State Counsel detailed to the court that the two are also in a critical condition and their survival hangs on a thin thread.
The court heard that Mackenzie, who ran the controversial Good News Church, had radicalised his followers to a level that makes it hard to save them from their wish to die.
“His death is a reminder of the dangers of starvation and the need for proper medical care for those who are on hunger strikes.
“It is also a reminder of the need for further investigation into the activities of Pastor Paul Mackenzie,” the State Counsel listed.
Police have been rescuing victims of the church, and in April this year, about 15 of them were found and rescued against their wishes.
They were discovered dying in Paul Mackenzie’s Shakahola 800-acre farm in Kilifi County where detectives from the Homicide department have since camped for months.
The key suspect Pastor Mackenzie told members of the press that he doesn’t know why he was in police custody even after Interior Cabinet Secretary CS Kithure Kindiki asserted authority that the cult-pastor will live the rest of his life behind bars.
