Tuesday, March 5, 2024 –Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has been ousted from his House position.
Heeding to the calls by Majority Leader in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wah who had, earlier, complained that some MPs do not add discussion value to Parliamentary proceedings and committees, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula today made the bold move to replace Salasya with a better competent lawmaker.
Wetang’ula, announced that Salasya be immediately replaced with Rongo MP Paul Oduor in the Departmental Committee on Regional Development.
The speaker was making this confirmation shortly after the Committee in which Salasya was part of had approved his removal.
“Further to the resolution of the house of Tuesday, October 27, 2022, appointing members into the various committees and according to the provisions of standing order 173, this house further approves the appointment of Paul Abuor MP to replace Peter Kalerwa Salasya MP in the departmental committee of Regional Development,” read the speaker of the national assembly.
Ichung’wah had raised concerns regarding the same saying, MPs who do not actively participate in Committees need to be replaced.
In his statement, he said such lawmakers should be reevaluated on the ground of their activities in every committee they are members.
According to the Majority leader, a number of MPs had also devised ways of signing for sitting allowances and immediately dodging the exercise leaving the burden to those who are committed with leadership.
“Immediately after the recess, the selections committee shall be sitting to reevaluate the performance of members in committees because a reevaluation process will mean not just attendance but how actively you participate in committee sittings.
“We are reevaluating your active participation in committees since we are almost mid-term and we evaluate who is keen on their varied committees,” MP Ichung’wah added.
It has also been argued that Chamber appearances had become another thorn in the flesh and that MPs who are notorious absentees should be warned.
Salasya would, later in the day, take to his X-Platform to rant over the ouster pointing accusing fingers at MP Junet Mohamed.
“Junet Mohamed plus his team have removed me from the committee in the National Assembly and replaced me immediately without notice. I will be giving a press statement tomorrow morning and Junet won’t like it. It’s another earthquake. If you rattle a sleeping snake will definitely bite you,” he threatened.
Salasya is a branded rubble-rouser and controversial legislator who, a month ago, was arrested for slapping a Member of County Assembly in Kakamega County.
