Thursday, April 25, 2024 –Opposition leader Raila Odinga has termed the ongoing flood emergency in the city as a national disaster.
He said that it is now clear that the country was facing a flooding disaster due to pounding rains that have since overwhelmed the Nairobi’s inefficient management.
Odinga addressing from Nairobi, said there is need to have a clear picture to rescue the residents who are being affected by the raging floods. He also said, this is an emergency which ought to be addressed as well as have a long-term solution.
He sent a message of condolences to those who had lost lives due to flooding waters and those who suffered any kind of loss due to the same.
Leaders from the opposition are extending all possible forms of support at any time and urged county government and national government to act with speed and join in the rescue mission.
“We fear our people could be in for worst time ever should these rains continue for the unexpected time. County government and well-wishers should help our people too,” he noted.
Severe flooding has covered all the roads in Kamukunji and various informal settlements like Blue Estate, Motherland, Kiambui, Mugunda, Mlolongo among others.
Hundreds of residenst have scampered seeking refuge in churches and safe neighbourhoods.
Mr. Odinga said further, that those living in Embakasi and Makadara can nolonger go to work following the flooding waters that have since destroyed key bridges
Yesterday, the National government led by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua held a crisis meeting to find a lasting solution to save the city from further destruction.
Governor Johsnon Sakaja, on his part, suspended any approvals of buildings until proper assessment of their legality and location is ascertained.
