Raila: Why I Didn’t Honour National Prayer Breakfast Invite

Wednesday, June 7, 2023 –Opposition leaders turned down National Prayer Breakfast invitations by the State which was scheduled today, on Wednesday, June 7, at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.

Confirming their official invitation to the national function, the opposition leadership noted that it would give the event a wide berth citing lack of honesty and humility from the side of the ruling party.

In a long rebuttal, Azimio la Umoja leaders led by Raila Odinga and Martha Karua argued that it was becoming a bad culture by the William Ruto-led administration to misuse the word of God while running down the country.

Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party wishes to confirm that its leaders received an invitation to the National Prayer Breakfast scheduled to take place at the Safari Park Hotel tomorrow, 7th June 2023,” the statement read in part.

Mr. Odinga’s team added that making a mockery with the name of the Almighty cannot be part of true Christianity.

The brigade, in a counter letter which it shared on its official walls, stated that God answers prayers from anywhere and, therefore, driving to Safari Park venue is not the only way Kenyans can speak to God.

“We believe the times require that as a country, we should approach our Creator and the Protector of our nation with honesty and humility and also talk to our people truthfully, frankly and boldly on the issues facing the nation today,” read the Azimio statement

They also added that they are only answerable to the Almighty God and not the presidency or the president.

Raila and Karua reasoned that the today’s National Prayer Breakfast did not reflect the required prayers and reconciliation environment.

Together with Kalonzo Musyoka, they added that part of those hosting the event did not display honesty to citizens and lacked respect to other leaders as well.

Therefore, the event, they stated, will dishonor God and the country claiming that leaders will display arrogance, superiority battles, and most of those in government will give false hopes to helpless citizens.

“The beauty of our faith is that we answer to an Almighty and Omnipresent God who, over the ages, has answered to prayers offered from the mansions of kings and queens as well as those of neglected people in forgotten parts of the earth,” the statement added.

The opposition, however, gave its members of Parliament MPs a greenlight to attend the event organised by the country’s executive.
