Tuesday, June 27, 2023 – New government has recalled Ambassador Judy Wakhungu just days after President William Ruto met her in France.
Wakhungu’s sacking comes at the time a new list of diplomats leaked on various social media platforms ahead of their appointment.
An impeccable source indicated that President Ruto will be making new State appointments in few weeks’ time as his government enters last phase of replacing Uhuru’s appointees.
“Of course, the President was involved in the decision to recall the Ambassador to France but as you may be aware, most Kenyan Embassies will soon receive new Heads,” a source divulged.
The source also added that it is not unusual for the new president to make such important replacements months after winning power.
“This is a normal occurrence within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, especially, when a new administration comes in to realign diplomatic relations,” the source further stated.
Four days ago, Ruto who flew to France was received by Ms Wakhungu whose appointment was done by retired head of State Uhuru Kenyatta in 2018.
The process of appointing Kenyan ambassadors begins with their nomination by the President before the list is forwarded to the Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations DFDR in the National Assembly.
The candidates show up for their vetting, which includes reviewing their qualifications, experience, integrity and suitability for the job.
DFDR Committee then forwards the names of the nominees for clearance and adoption by Members of Parliament. Should they be approved, the President officially appoints them as ambassadors.
Before being appointed as Kenyan Ambassador to France, Wakhungu served as tourism cabinet secretary for five years in the first term of Uhuruto government.
