Tuesday, May 28, 2024 –Government has removed automatic funding on university students; saying plans are underway to have this replaced with a different type of funding for sustainability.
Addressing this today Tuesday May 28, the head of State, William Ruto, announced that students who attain the cutoff marks and are supposed to join campus, will have to be taken through the new funding model that was first introduced last year but yet to hold footing.

Dr. Ruto was speaking on this during his meeting with hundreds of university vice chancellors at Statehouse, Nairobi.
He argued that, this new system is aimed at bringing to an end the debt crisis at the public universities across the country.
Ruto, therefore, assured the VCs that this move will see all public universities breathe a sigh of relief from the burden of debts hanging on them.
“The vice-chancellors confirmed that the financing model is working and in 3 years will sort out the financial challenges facing our universities,” stated Ruto.
The newly-introduced funding model will now require students who are placed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, to apply for a government scholarship, case by case, before the State finally looks at each case according to individual weight.

“Placement by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service will now be based on merit and choice. Students will apply separately for financial assistance, including government scholarships and loans “PS for the State Department of Higher Education and Research, Beatrice Inyangala explained.
The model will see the funding also calculated according to the cost of the course each student is qualified. This will help have the actual funding approved; unlike it is today where the funds are released equally.
