Saturday, February 17, 2024 –Government has announced a nationwide rounding up of drug addicts, who, it will facilitate for rehabilitation.
Speaking during a Security briefing with Kirinyaga County and Mwea West Sub-County Security and Intelligence Committees on Friday February 16, Interior Cabinet Secretary CS Kithure Kindiki ordered all local administrators around the country to conduct data collection on drug addiction and produce the numbers to his desk for an uegent action.
He announced an initiative which is aimed at assisting people and families which have been chronically affected with drugs
“We have initiated a programme to assist people who are chronically addicted mostly in the villages and slums.
“Chiefs and their assistants should collect data from villages of all chronic addicts so that we can take them for rehabilitation.
“This will help the community from the demand side of this menace,” said the CS.
Prof. Kindiki noted that their government is also going to address the supply of drugs and liquor in villages in two ways – he directed county security teams to liaise with county governments to review all licenses of bars in their areas and shut down all unlicensed businesses.
“I have directed all the relevant officials to close all the outlets selling alcohol in our villages because rogue business persons have established alcohol in the middle of the villages; what has ruined our families,” he stated.
He, therefore, directed that, going forward, as national security policy, only proper liquor establishments will be licensed by government to operate in towns and not villages.
On the same note, CS Kindiki said, the government will immediately conduct a nationwide crackdown on illicit liquor, and security teams in all 47 Counties are instructed to effect the directive, comprehensively.
