Thursday, April 1, 2021 -Abdikadir Haji is almost being announced, unopposed, the next Senator of Garissa County.
The Kenya’s Electoral Commission IEBC is expected to make this official as no one else had upto the deadline submitted papers for the same seat.
Speaking from Garissa, area Returning Officer Hussein Gure confirmed he had finished in paperwork since there is never an election when a candidate has nobody to oppose him or her.
“After receiving the nomination papers from only one aspirant, I have forwarded the information to IEBC headquarters for the commission to make a determination,” he stated.
The election slated May 18 will therefore not take place as only one candidate Mr. Haji is in the race. Candidates were to tender their papers by March 31.
Abdikadir, son to the late Yusuf Haji, was cleared on Tuesday to vie when he presented his documents on a Jubilee Party ticket.
It is reported that he also held a meeting with ODM Deputy Party leader Hassan Joho who gave him a node to take the seat unopposed.
The lucky Abdikadir also found further support from grassroots elders whom he met sometimes back for an endorsement.
This will be the third case in the country where a candidate is declared winner unopposed.
Other past cases include Muisalia Mudavadi and Moses Kuria who were elected unopposed.
