Monday, February 19, 2024 –The Kenya Copyright Board KECOBO now wants Music Copyright Society of Kenya MCSK probed over alleged misappropriation of sh 56 million ought to have been distributed to musicians as royalties.
KECOBO has written to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission EACC requesting the anti-graft agency to investigate the Ezekiel Mutua-led Music Copyright Society.
KECOBO, through a letter addressed to EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak, wants all books of accounts to be investigated over the misuse of music money that should be reaching content creators across the country.
KECOBO met with three Collective Management Organisations (CMOs) on January 25, 2024, to review their performance in 2023.
Besides MCSK, KECOBO also met with the Performers Rights Society of Kenya PRSK and the Kenya Association of Music Producers KAMP.
“During the meeting, it emerged that one of the CMOs, Music Copyright Society of Kenya Limited (MCSK) could not sufficiently account for the sum of Kshs. 56 (Fifty-Six) Million or thereabouts, money that should have been paid to musicians as royalties,” Kenya Copyright Board Executive Director Edward Sigei explained.
In the letter, Sigei stated that KECOBO has good reason to believe that the money was misappropriated or diverted to other things that had no value to the hard-working musicians.
“The purpose of this letter is, therefore, to request you to commence investigations into possible fraud at the organisation,” Sigei requested as seen by this desk.
In that respect, KECOBO promised to provide any other required and useful information regarding theft of artistes’ funds by MCSK.
This coming just a week after Genge rapper Herbart Nakitare or Nonini fired a warning shot at Mr. Ezekiel Mutua over the same.
The two would publicly clash over artistes’ money with Mutua describing Nonini as a ‘corrupt fugitive’.
