Sunday, May 30, 2021 -Kenyans suffering from Covid-19 will have to settle their own hospital bills following new directive from the Ministry Of Health.
According to the Report which Homenews.co.ke has seen, the National Hospital Insurance Fund NHIF will not cater for Covid-19 patients across the country unless for those who remit sh 1,700 and above in monthly premiums.
The report has definitely left many poor Kenyans stranded since they have been paying NHIF fee with hopes that it will save them during such a crisis.
Media quoted NHIF Chairman Lewis Nguyai who announced that anyone who has been paying lesser premiums – sh 500 and below – will have to foot his or her own medical bills in case they are affected with the virus.
The Chairman defended the move saying it lacked logic for their organization to foot for patients under the Supa Cover category because of the money they pay to the kitty.
“Divide Ksh8 million and see how many families paying Ksh 500 will have deprived the fund. Statistically, this is not attainable at present.
“We are working on modalities to see how we can cover them, though it is a risk that we also don’t understand,” explained the chairman.
For anyone who will been affected by the virus and hospitalized, they will have to part with at least sh 21,000 every day while those in a critical stage may find themselves paying in access of sh 51,000.
