Friday, March 1, 2024 –High School leavers who want to join the National Youth Service NYS training will now join with, atleast, a D-(minus) grade.

The minimum Kenya Certificate of Secondary School entry grade was lowered with an aim of accommodating as many willing students as possible.

NYS Director General James Tembur shared that the move would also level the playing field for all youths, regardless of their background; saying some went to schools that are notorious of poor results hence cannot be judged on the account of performance.

“The Ministry has lowered the mean grade to enable youths from disadvantaged communities to have an opportunity to join NYS,” Tembur told the Aden Yusuf Haji-led Committee.

In their reaction, Members of Parliament have termed the move as good and advised for equitable allocation of enrollment slots.

“The president’s directive has heightened interest in joining NYS, making transparency and equal distribution of slots during recruitment crucial,” Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge highlighted.

Apart from the KCSE mean grade, candidates must also be Kenyan nationals aged between 18-24 years old, be physically fit and show proof of a certificate of good conduct issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI.

Committee Chairperson who is also the Nakuru County MP, Liza Chelule, also heaped praise on NYS’ latest recruitment by also considering people with disabilities.
