Wednesday, October 18, 2023 –Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has today been arrested ahead of her planned impeachment.
Mwangaza was cornered by the police while distributing her Okolea Programme cows in Central Imenti area.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kinidki banned the Okolea meetings on September 22, citing clashes that had been witnessed before.
The Okolea Programme is her initiative aimed at uplifting living standards of residents and families in her county.
“It is disheartening to witness needless curtailment of development efforts meant to benefit the vulnerable in our community,” Mwangaza was quoted.
It was reported that the first-time governor was, this Wednesday October 18, picked up by a contingent of police officers today noon.
She then used her social media platform to accuse the law enforcers of being used to fight political wars in Meru.
“I was informed by police officers to accompany them and I obliged. I am praying that those who have sent the officers to release me,” she added.
Governor Mwangaza’s woes have escalated in recent time with Members of County Assembly MCAs threatening to impeach her for the second time.
Recently, she was involved in verbal altercations with her own MCAs who have since vowed to send her packing, again.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, days ago, allowed locals to decide the fate of their governor saying neither him or President William Ruto will involve themselves in the local Meru County leadership fights.
On her arrest today, the governor maintained that she will go on with her development programmes around the area.
Through the Chief of Staff, Ms Mwangaza refuted reports that the Wednesday tour in Imenti was part of the Okelea meetings that had recently been banned by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.
Her Chief of Staff clarified that the visit to donate the cows was part of the county’s development programme.
Kinidki banned the Okolea meetings on September 22, citing clashes that had been witnessed in her earlier meetings.
