Monday, May 1, 2023 –President William Ruto has asked Kenyans to choose which brand of maize flour was good for them following an uproar that ensued in Labour Day celebrations.
Speaking at Uhuru Gardens today Monday May 1, the president who appeared to be stepping in for his deputy Rigathi Gachagua following a backlash, stated that:
“There is maize flour costing 200, other brands go for 180 while the cheapest goes for Ksh158, this gives the consumer an opportunity to choose what suits them”.
According to President Ruto’s counsel, consumers should be able to pick which one suits them considering variations in prices.
His deputy who spoke before him had attracted wrath from the audience after he claimed that the issue of unga had been dealt with conclusively by theirgovernment.
DP Gachagua mentioned that Ruto’s government had dealt with the issue of cost of living and every household should be enjoying today. This, however, did not sit well with the audience who responded with boos.
“The government has put measures in place to lower the cost of living and even the cost of maize flour has come down to something slightly above Ksh150,” Gachagua told the gathering, amid long but controlled jeers.
In their recent remarks, both Ruto and Gachagua fired at the opposition for using street protest to force unga price to come down.
“Demonstrations cannot bring down the cost of living, it cannot bring down the cost of maize flour,” Ruto stated recently.
The Kenya Kwanza administration, in their plan, believes in subsidizing production to bring down the cost of living for everyone.
Part of Ruto’s efforts include providing affordable farm inputs for families to plant maize and beans for self-sufficiency.
