Tuesday, July 4, 2023 –President William Ruto now wants government’s spending on salaries to come down after indicating that the current expenditure was way above the normal level.
Speaking at the Statehouse Nairobi on Tuesday July 4 noon, Dr. Ruto noted that Kenya, as of now, spends about 46 percent of income on salaries and wages instead of 35 percent standard rates.
“This is way above our target of 35 per cent. We must work towards bringing down the figure.”
While calling for the reduced spending on salaries to State officers, Ruto noted that the move will ensure that the country’s development plan is not starved of funds.
He was making the remarks on Tuesday July 4 at Statehouse, Nairobi, during the swearing-in of Principal Secretaries Salome Muhia-Beacco (Correctional Services) and Anne Wang’ombe (Performance & Delivery Services).
The President asked the two departments to work with their Cabinet Secretaries to deliver on the Government’s main agenda.
“Kenyans expect us to deliver on our promises and make their lives better. You have the requisite knowledge to deliver on this agenda.
“We must also embrace correctional best practices to empower prisoners besides preparing them for productive engagement in the country,” Ruto further said.
The head of State urged heads of departments in his government to ensure prudent use of public resources warning any against corruption.
Present in the session were Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Solicitor General Shadrack Mose among other leaders close to the Statehouse
