Friday, June 18, 2021 -Deputy President William Ruto has protested plans by the electoral commission to bar non graduates from vying in 2022.
In their efforts to reinforce the law in the next elections, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC led by Wafula Chebukati recently announced that anyone without a Degree will not be cleared to vie for any elective seat.
But in a sharp rejoinder, DP William Ruto came out fiercely protesting that leadership is never in the Degrees but its both inborn and God given.
He mentioned that it lacks logic to demand same academic qualifications for both MCAs and MPs and promised to stand with them and fight for their rights. He cited Article 38 which prohibits unreasonable restrictions standing in between the voters and candidates.
Ruto therefore wants any such restrictions to be done within the law rather than for political reasons.
“It is not reasonable for only one percent of Kenyans to be able to vie for elective positions,” expressed the DP.
According to the DP, Parliament must be tasked to repeal Section 22 in the Elections Act that seeks to interfere with candidates wiling to vie for elective posts.
While making his submission on the floor of the House, Minority leader John Mbadi reignited this debate by recounting a day he forewarned non graduates in 2017 to go back to school but he was ignored.
From statistics, quiet a number of MPs and MCAs don’t have Degrees and subjecting them to this requirement will be a big blow to them which might then force most to postpone their political ambitions or to completely bolt away.
