Wednesday, October 25, 2023 –County Government of Nairobi has today issued a circular banning all hawkers from the Central Business District CBD.
As seen by Homenews.Co.ke, on Wednesday October 25, Governor Johnson Sakaja issued the banning directive in what he described as a strategic move to restore sanity in the city.
He shared with the public that this move was arrived at after intensive consultations between inspectorate officers and representatives of city hawkers.
It, therefore means, hawking and its related activities will be banned along the busy Tom Mboya section leading to Moi Avenue. Hawkers will not be tolerated on the nearby pavements.
“We want to treat our people as human beings and do the right thing. I want to make it clear that from Tom Mboya coming to Moi Avenue, the lanes connecting to Moi Avenue will have no hawking,” the announcement read in part.
The first-time governor argued that he is a leader of everyone including none-hawkers who also want calmness and clear streets for other activities.
“I’m not just taking care of you, I’m also taking care of the people walking in the city,” Sakaja told hawkers.
He, however, assured that hawkers operating from the backstreets will be allowed to go on with their work uninterrupted.
“In fact, they should be given priority on the back lanes because we have a plan for that road. We have a plan for that road because we have received billions from investors from the French Development Agency when I was in Paris, we will construct a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system,” he added.
Governor Sakaja also stated that there were preparations underway to widen the road, with the intention of facilitating hawking in the future.
On the similar note, he announced that all inspectorate officers (kanjos) will undergo refresher training sessions on how to handle people during the operations.
Thereafter, they will be permanently assigned to specifics spots in the CBD to ensure new orders are strictly adhered to.
This move by the governor happening days after he was roasted for allegedly ordering a destructive raid that saw boiled eggs vendors lose valuables on unknown amount.
The Governor would shortly distance himself from the damage while at the same time offering to compensate all those who lost stock in the city raid.
