Tuesday, June 20, 2023 –A city mob today descended on a traffic police officer manning Ngara area in Nairobi City.
Hoemnedws.co.ke received a video clip from the ground showing the cops scamper for their safety as touts and other residents pelt them with stones in the Monday June 19 morning scene.
When this writer attempted to seek clarification from witnesses, it was established that they were not happy with constant frustrations from the State officers who have been harassing them on a daily basis in the name of maintaining law and order.
The touts were well armed with crud weapons, stones and sticks when attacking the cops on duty in the Ngara.
Though the day started well and cops could be seen talking and mingling with the touts, hell shortly broke loose making the scene highly ungovernable.
In a meeting held later on, the matatu crew members addressed onlookers while arguing that they were unlawfully targeted by the police.
They accused the said police officers of collecting bribes, forced arrests and arbitrary disruption of economic activities in Ngara.
By the time of going to the press, it had not been clear whether there were registered any casualties in the ugly melee.
But reacting to the incident, Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai advised the matatu operators not to take law into their own hands since this could turn ugly should authorities decide to send a retaliatory force in the area.
“Nobody should allow this to happen to any law enforcement unit. Why do you do this? You know that the police will be sent back to this area with a vengeance to stamp their authority Crack units will be deployed here. Losers will be who?” he wrote.
Other Kenyans thought the motorists and the police should learn to resolve their issues in an amicable way to avoid such unnecessary animosity.
