Wednesday, February 28, 2024 –President William Ruto now wants Kenyans across all the 47 counties to elect women governors in 2027.
Speaking in Homa Bay County on Tuesday February 27, Ruto openly expressed his admiration on women leaders saying, most of them has demonstrated maturity and true leadership in positions they have been elected and therefore a need to create them more space of leadership.
In support of Majority leader in the National assembly Kimani Ichung’wah, Ruto revealed, though unconstitutional, that the Kikuyu MP has a similar idea that women can do a better job and ought to take over from men.
“Kimani Ichung’wah has told me that we should seriously consider making this seat of governors a women’s seat, maybe women can do a better job. I want to tell the G7 our great women governors that you have my support as you do the wonderful job that you are already doing.
“I want to encourage others, if you have a chance to elect a woman governor, don’t squander that chance, elect a woman governor,” Ruto stated.
Of the three Special economic zones issued to counties two are from counties where women are governors.
Council of Governors CoG Chair Anne Waiguru, while also speaking, asked for a 30 percent women slot in counties.
Ruto seized the opportunity to promise the seven elected governors of his unequivocal support to further develop their counties.
According to a statement from the Homa Bay County Governor, the President’s participation in the official opening of the Homa Bay International Investment Conference 2024 and the launch of Riwa City as a Special Economic Zone demonstrated the importance of the event in county’s transformation into an industrial hub.
